I was reading articles for my Medical Copyediting course at the University of Chicago Graham School and came across this great quote. The article was a reminder to copy editors that they are capable of copyediting an academic article on a subject they may not be an expert on!
The paper has been through peer review—a process where experts in the subject have gone through the content to ensure accuracy. The copy editor’s job is to make sure the grammar, punctuation, etc. is correct and that a lay audience (e.g. the editor😉) is able to comprehend the subject without any research experience. Remember! You always have Google for something you may not completely understand.
